XHHW and XHHW-2 Cable Buyers in New York

XHHW-2 is cross-linked polyethylene insulated conductor, rated for wet and dry locations at 90°C, and it is the default feeder and service conductor in most modern commercial work. It is also the material most likely to be left over in quantity when a service size changes after the gear is ordered.

WHAT WE REVIEW

XHHW / XHHW-2: what we review

Because XHHW-2 is smaller in diameter than an equivalently rated thermoplastic conductor, a reel holds more footage and takes less space — which is convenient right up to the moment the project ends and nobody wants to store it. We review XHHW and XHHW-2 in copper and aluminum, in 600 V and 1 kV constructions, from 14 AWG through 1000 MCM, including the large feeder sizes that dominate industrial surplus.

The review looks at four things: metal, size, insulation integrity and documented footage. Cross-linked polyethylene is durable, but it is not indestructible — sunlight, ozone and physical damage at the reel flange all matter. If reels have been outside for years, say so. A truthful condition note is what allows a realistic number instead of a rejected lot.

Formats accepted for review

  • Full factory reels with banding intact
  • Partial reels with tag footage noted
  • Cut feeder lengths from a service change
  • Aluminum XHHW-2 overstock from a distributor
  • Copper equipment grounding conductor in matching sizes

What to send

  • The jacket print: type, temperature rating, voltage and metal
  • Reel tag footage against the remaining wire pack diameter
  • Whether the insulation shows sunlight cracking or flange abrasion
  • Strand class, which matters for large feeder terminations

No offer is made until someone has read the jacket legend or the reel tag. If neither survives, the material is still reviewable — it is simply reviewed as unidentified, and the outcome reflects that.

REFERENCE

XHHW / XHHW-2 — questions sellers ask

Answers describe how material is reviewed. They are not an offer, a price or a commitment to purchase.

Do you review XHHW that has been stored outdoors for years?

Yes, with photographs. Cross-linked polyethylene withstands weather better than thermoplastic insulation, but reels left in sun and standing water still need inspection. Send close-ups of the outer wrap and the flange contact points, and we will say plainly whether the condition is workable.

Is 1 kV XHHW-2 handled differently from 600 V?

It is reviewed as a distinct construction because the application range is wider. Note the voltage class on the tag and in the description; do not assume a buyer will infer it from the size.

Can copper and aluminum XHHW be submitted together?

They can be submitted in one message, but they should be photographed and counted separately. Metal is the first thing a review sorts on, and mixed photographs slow the process down.

WHO SELLS THIS MATERIAL

Where this material usually comes from

Most lots arrive from one of four places: a contractor closing out a job, a plant replacing equipment, a distributor clearing slow stock, or a demolition project releasing cable legitimately. Each is reviewed on the same facts.

BY LOCATION

Material is reviewed wherever it sits in New York State. City pages describe local patterns; the review process does not change by geography.
