Surplus wire questions, answered plainly
Sixteen questions that come up repeatedly, answered without sales language. If something is not covered, call or email — the answer will be specific rather than a brochure sentence.
Materials and scope
Who buys surplus electrical wire in New York?
This desk buys it, statewide. Material is reviewed wherever it sits in New York, from a Brooklyn basement to a plant in Massena, and the purchase is made directly rather than through a broker chain.
Where can I sell surplus electrical wire in New York State?
Through a review like this one. Send the material details and photographs; if the lot is accepted, terms are written and freight arranged. There is no counter to visit, because this is a buying desk rather than a yard.
Do you buy unused electrical wire from contractors?
Yes — job overage, cancelled-project material and leftover reels are the most common source. See the electrical contractors page for what usually accumulates and what documentation helps.
Do you buy partial reels?
Yes. Footage is the value driver, so a tag reading or a measured estimate with a stated method is what makes a partial reviewable. A partial of a very common small gauge may not justify freight alone but often travels with a larger lot.
What wire sizes do you review?
14 AWG through 4/0, and 250 through 1000 MCM. Voltage classes run from 600 V building wire through 1 kV industrial cable, medium voltage at 5 to 35 kV, and transmission class above 35 kV where documentation exists.
Do you buy 500 MCM and 750 MCM cable?
Yes. Large feeder conductor is reviewed on size, metal, strand class, insulation and documented footage. Partial reels are accepted when the footage can be established.
Do you buy medium voltage cable?
Yes, at 5, 8, 15, 25 and 35 kV, with insulation level and shield construction identified. Above 35 kV, documentation and service history determine whether a reel is reviewable at all.
Is aluminum wire worth selling?
Large aluminum feeder and service cable is reviewed on its own terms — size, insulation, conductor count and footage — rather than converted to a copper equivalent. Modern AA-8000 alloy is a different material from old EC-grade branch wire.
Do you buy wire from data centres and industrial plants?
Yes. Those operations produce the most documented surplus: feeder, grounding, tray, control and instrumentation cable, usually new and tagged. See the data centres and manufacturing pages.
Do you buy scrap wire or stripped copper?
No. This desk buys surplus and released wire and cable for reuse, not scrap metal, and it does not quote by weight sight-unseen.
Do you buy installed wire or demolition cable?
Installed systems are not purchased. Cable removed during demolition or decommissioning is reviewed as recovered material, provided the owner has released it in writing and you are authorised to sell it.
Evidence and identification
What if the reel tags are missing?
The jacket print usually identifies the type, size and voltage. Where neither exists, the material is reviewed as unidentified, and the review is more conservative. That is a legitimate outcome, not a rejection.
Commercial terms
Who pays freight?
It is agreed per transaction. Depending on lot size, distance and access, freight is arranged by us or by the seller, and the written terms name which. Free freight is never promised in advance.
Do you promise the best price?
No. Any claim of top-dollar pricing before a reel has been read is a sales line, not a valuation. The review says what the material is and what it can be purchased for; you are free to compare.
How are photographs used?
For the review only. They are not published, resold or used in marketing without explicit permission. The privacy page sets this out in plain language.
Do you buy outside New York?
This site covers New York State. Material is sometimes reviewed from neighbouring states when a lot is large enough to justify the freight, but the service area, content and pages here are New York.

The fastest answer is a photograph
Send the reel tag and one wide shot. That usually resolves the first four questions at once.
