WHAT WE REVIEW

Large MCM: what we review

Large MCM conductor is ordered for services, switchgear and feeders. When gear is resized, relocated or cancelled, the conductor is often already on site — and it is not the kind of material a facilities team can quietly consume elsewhere. Common sizes are 250, 300, 350, 400, 500, 600, 750 and 1000 MCM, with 500 and 750 the most frequently encountered surplus.

A large conductor review needs the size, the metal, the insulation type, the strand class and the footage. Strand class matters for terminations and is printed on the tag; insulation type determines the application and is printed on the jacket. If both are present, the review is straightforward. If neither is legible, measure the conductor diameter and photograph the cut end, and expect a more conservative outcome.

Formats accepted for review

  • Full reels in original banding with legible tags
  • Partial reels with tag footage
  • Cut feeder lengths from a gear change
  • Parallel sets kept together as ordered

What to send

  • Size in MCM and the conductor metal
  • Strand class — compact, compressed, concentric
  • Insulation type and voltage class from the jacket print
  • Footage on the tag, and the physical diameter of the remaining pack

No offer is made until someone has read the jacket legend or the reel tag. If neither survives, the material is still reviewable — it is simply reviewed as unidentified, and the outcome reflects that.

Photographs of the reel tag and jacket legend are the fastest route to a review. Approximate footage is acceptable; a stated method is better than a confident guess.

REFERENCE

Large MCM — questions sellers ask

Answers describe how material is reviewed. They are not an offer, a price or a commitment to purchase.

Do you buy 500 MCM and 750 MCM in less than full reel quantities?

Yes. Partial reels of large conductor are reviewed regularly. Because footage is the value driver, give the tag reading if it exists and measure the wire pack if it does not.

Is copper 750 MCM always worth more than aluminum?

Per pound, copper is worth more. Per foot of installed capacity the comparison is not direct, because aluminium is sized larger for the same ampacity. We quote the material in front of us rather than a metal-price translation.

Can parallel feeder sets be split?

They are more useful kept together, since a parallel set was ordered as a set. If they must be split, list each reel separately with its footage.

WHO SELLS THIS MATERIAL

Where this material usually comes from

Most lots arrive from one of four places: a contractor closing out a job, a plant replacing equipment, a distributor clearing slow stock, or a demolition project releasing cable legitimately. Each is reviewed on the same facts.

BY LOCATION

Material is reviewed wherever it sits in New York State. City pages describe local patterns; the review process does not change by geography.
